Players must register with the club to participate in Winter League; they will then be included in a team relevant to their age grade. The club enters teams in the Northern Region Competition, in the age grades as set out by the NZIHA. Sabres teams play other clubs teams within the region, earning points to determine the top two teams in each age grade. They then participate in the NZ National Championships, against the top teams from the other Regions.
There are also other tournaments held by various clubs during the season that teams may choose to enter, giving them the opportunity to play teams from the other regions. Players competing in the Northern Region Competition also have the opportunity to be selected into the Northern Region Representative Team, to compete at the Inter-Regional Championships. From there players are invited to trial for selection into New Zealand Teams. Spring League is a continuation of the winter league because most players want to play more hockey after the season ends. This runs from October to December. This League runs over summer from December to February and operates a slightly different format. Games are shorter and with one less player the game is more free flowing and faster. ‘3 on 3’ is run by Skateland at Mt. Wellington.
